Design & Practice is an Amsterdam based internationally operating design studio specialised in branding, graphic design and art direction for clients in the cultural, luxury and hospitality sector. 


Our mission is to create and communicate thought provoking experiences through strategic analytical thinking, a collaborative relationship with the client and a unique tactile design aesthetic.


Design & Practice builds strategic design solutions based on a philosophy of experimentation and artistic research.

Creativity is at the core of both our own work and most of the companies we work for.


Materiality plays a key role in all our projects. As most experiences are becoming digital, tactility and material quality are becoming increasingly important.


Innovative processes that push the boundaries of design make identities a personal, haptic experience and make a brand stand out.


Our multi-disciplinary approach enables us to execute a brand expression holistically through brand identity, packaging, interior surfaces, print, marketing and digital.

Interior Branding for Hyatt Regency Amsterdam

Project gemaakt voor Hyatt Regency in de Architectuur & Planning industrie voor een B2B / B2C publiek in 2014.A collection of art and graphic surfaces was created for Hyatt Regency Amsterdam to add a unique and personal experience to the hotel, with strong links to the local area. Inspired by the nearby Hortus Botanicus - one of the oldest in the world - scientific horticultural illustrations were blended and edited to form new botanical assemblages to make guests not just sleep, but dream during their stay in the hotel.

Project gemaakt voor PublicisDrugstore in de Restaurants industrie voor een B2C publiek in 2018.Design&Practice was invited by London based product and interior designer Tom Dixon to contribute to the redesign of Le Drugstore, a restaurant that is part of the legendary Publicis Drugstore site on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.A seventies hotspot at the corner of the Avenue Champs-Élysées and the Arc the Triomph, the Publicis-Drugstore has always been a small piece of effortless-cool American culture in the heart of Paris.Inspired by the mad men area, the aim was to reinterpret the heritage of American ad agency culture and typical American drugstores for the contemporary Parisian customer.

The sample box was designed to be scalable in the years to come, allowing the sales team to add and remove material samples of different dimensions and weight without a problem.The design was based on the redeveloped brand positioning for Tom Dixon.

Project gemaakt voor Hearst in de Restaurants industrie voor een B2C publiek in 2016.Design & Practice was commissioned to design an identity and packaging collection drawing inspiration from the graphic heritage of the Harper's Bazaar magazine with a contemporary feel and link to the design of the interior.Taking one of the most iconic titles in fashion publishing into a modern hospitality environment, we looked for a balance between keeping the integrity of the heritage and formulating a contemporary elegant visual language.

Thanks to Design & Practice's work, we enjoyed a surge in traffic, especially on our case studies pages. Our new articles and designs have received increasing attention. Design & Practice paid special attention to the story behind our company and where we are coming from for our different branding elements. With their expertise focussed on building the brand, we realised we could add some of our own expertise in the area of UI/UX to establish the best result.

Wat was het doel van de samenwerking?
We wanted to elevate the brand image of our interior studio and differentiate our profile from what was happening around us. We were looking for a redesign of our identity to reflect our sense for understated playful luxury and subtle material detailing. Design & Practice designed an identity system that incorporated both straightforward brand assets such as logos and various templates, as well as playful scalable graphic tools and print work. Our business cards still get a lot of positive responses!
Wat vond je het leukst tijdens de samenwerking?
We thoroughly enjoyed the concept phase. Design & Practice dove deep into their research to explore new ways of expressing our identity and provided us with a wide selection of interesting ideas. They push the boundaries of design and material that made our identity a real personal experience. We also loved being made a part of the process, so we could steer the ideas into a direction that works for our situation.
Zijn er verbeterpunten?
The original anticipated deadline got moved a bit, as Design & Practice raised the level of expectation and needed a bit more time for research and due diligence, in order to make sure the identity got developed to its fullest potential. We weren't in a major rush so the extended deadline paid off in terms of quality of execution and attention to detail.
